Mr Ghazi Ismael is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon based in Galway, with over 10 years of surgical experience in Ireland and the UK. He holds a full time consultant appointment at University Hospital Galway.
His practice focuses on general surgery, including abdominal emergency surgery, open and laparoscopic hernia repair, and gallbladder surgery, alongside specialist expertise in upper gastrointestinal disease. His areas of interest include reflux disease, hiatal hernias and Barrett’s oesophagus, gastric ulcer disease, oesophageal and gastric cancers, upper and lower GI endoscopy, and bariatric surgery.

Mr Ghazi Ismael graduated in medicine (MBBS) in 2009. He undertook his postgraduate surgical training in multiple centres of excellence in Dublin, Ireland, and was awarded the FRCS (Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery) by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2021.
He is a member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
He has also completed multiple accredited postgraduate courses in advanced endoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, emergency and critical care surgery, and trauma management.
Mr Ismael completed advanced subspecialty fellowships in the UK (NHS), including
Upper GI Cancer Fellowship at the Greater Manchester Upper GI Cancer Unit, Salford Royal NHS Trust (2022 to 2023), a regional tertiary oesophago gastric cancer centre.
Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Sunderland Royal NHS Trust (Royal College of Surgeons of England), an internationally recognised high volume bariatric unit.
Laparoscopic treatment of hernia and gallbladder disease, as well as general surgical emergencies. Open and minimally invasive management of reflux disease, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and oesophageal and gastric cancers, with diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
