Professor Aisling Hogan is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with extensive experience in colorectal surgery. She graduated from University College Dublin in 2004, followed by an internship at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. Professor Hogan completed surgical training in Ireland and was awarded an MD by UCD for her research on oestrogen receptors in colonic smooth muscle, which earned her the European Young Investigator Award in Warsaw.
Following her higher surgical training, Professor Hogan focused on her special interest in colorectal surgery. She achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI) and subsequently completed a laparoscopic colorectal and pelvic floor fellowship at Oxford University Hospital, further advancing her expertise in minimally invasive surgery.
In August 2017, Professor Hogan was appointed as a General and Colorectal Surgeon at Galway University Hospital. She also holds the position of Honorary Personal Professor at the School of Medicine in NUI Galway. In 2022, she commenced practice at Bon Secours Hospital Galway, where she continues to provide expert care in colorectal surgery.
Professor Hogan is deeply involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as well as surgical research. She has authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of colorectal surgery, contributing significantly to advancements in the specialty.
Professor Hogan specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoidal disease, and complex pelvic floor disorders, including rectal prolapse and faecal incontinence. Her expertise in these areas ensures high-quality care for patients with a wide range of colorectal conditions.
