About BonsConnect
An electronic health record system, or ‘EHR’ for short, is a secure digital platform for patient medical records.
It provides each patient with a unique digital record containing important details such as medical history, diagnoses, medications, allergies, treatment plans, test results, referral and discharge letters, and clinical notes.
Unlike paper records, an EHR provides a real-time view of your information, allowing authorised members of your care team to access and update your record instantly and securely whenever you attend our hospitals.
BonsConnect is the name of Bon Secours Health System’s new EHR system.
From admissions through to recovery, BonsConnect allows staff to securely access patient information, documenting and coordinating your care journey in real-time.
It replaces the majority of paper charts and documents with a future-focused digital solution that enhances our delivery of patient-centred care – keeping you and your healthcare team connected.
This investment is part of our ongoing focus on innovation and patient safety.
Moving from paper to digital records allows for faster, more accurate information sharing between teams, reduces duplication and manual errors, and enhances the quality and consistency of care.
It also supports our vision of fully integrated care across all Bon Secours hospitals in Ireland.
BonsConnect launched in Bon Secours Hospital Limerick and Bon Secours Hospital Tralee on 1st December 2025.
Other Bon Secours hospitals will transition to BonsConnect in 2026 as part of a phased rollout. Once complete, our teams across the country will be able to securely view and update one connected patient record system.
BonsConnect brings together information from multiple systems into a single digital platform for patient records.
This provides our teams with real-time access to accurate information about you, supporting them in making more informed and timely decisions around your care.
It also reduces the need to search for paper records held across multiple departments, minimising delays, repetitive paperwork, and errors associated with manual data entry. By improving our processes, BonsConnect enables safer, more seamless care throughout your patient journey.
Information for patients
You don’t need to take any action before your appointment. Our staff will manage everything as normal and guide you through any new processes.
You can still book and pay for appointments in the same way as before. More information on this is available here.
Our teams may take a little extra time as they adjust to the new system following our 1st December launch in Limerick and Tralee. Delays may occur in some areas; however, our staff will be on hand to safely guide you through your visit.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this short transition period.
Once fully in place, BonsConnect will ultimately enhance and streamline your experience with us.
Your previous paper records will continue to be stored securely within Bon Secours Health System and remain part of your medical history, in compliance with data protection and other regulations.
Key information will be safely scanned or linked to your new digital record.
If you have been a patient in more than one Bon Secours hospital, BonsConnect will help ensure your care information is connected across those sites once the system is rolled out across our hospital network.
Data security and patient confidentiality are our top priorities.
BonsConnect meets all GDPR and data protection requirements and is hosted on a secure, encrypted cloud platform. Moving away from paper to digital records also ensures nothing can be misplaced.
Only authorised members of your care team will access your record. All access and activity within the system is logged, monitored and audited in compliance with GDPR and Bon Secours policies.
Patients don’t yet have direct access to BonsConnect. This is something we plan to advance in the next stage of our digital transformation.
If you need a copy of your medical record, you can still request it through the usual process here.
You will continue to receive your results, letters, and communications in the same way you do now.
BonsConnect supports quicker, more efficient sharing of information between your hospital care team across multiple departments and your primary care team.
Your GP will continue to refer you through the usual channels. To receive discharge summaries, the introduction of BonsConnect means Limerick and Tralee will move to using Healthmail – a secure email service already in use by GPs.
BonsConnect will ultimately support quicker, more efficient sharing of information between your GP and hospital care team.
As with all new systems, we have comprehensive backup and contingency processes in place to ensure your care continues safely in the event of any issues.
If the system is unavailable for any reason, staff will revert to custom-built paper documents that can then be transferred into BonsConnect when the issue has been resolved.
