Insurance overview
All patients must provide accurate medical insurance information. While the hospital will handle the insurance claim, your contract is with your insurance company, not the hospital. It’s your responsibility to make sure the hospital fees are paid in full within a reasonable time. The amount your insurance covers will depend on your specific policy. Charges may also vary depending on the procedures you need and your insurance coverage. Please contact us before your appointment to confirm any charges that may need to be paid on the day.
If you have any questions with regards to your coverage, please do not hesitate to contact your local Bon Secours hospital or contact your insurance company directly.
The main schemes covered are:
- Voluntary Healthcare Insurance (VHI)
- Laya Healthcare
- Irish Life Health
- Level Health
- Garda Medical Aid
- Prison Officers
Health Insurance Cover
We recommend that you check your insurance coverage before your admission. You can do this by contacting your insurance company directly. Be aware that many insurance plans have shortfalls, meaning you may need to pay some costs yourself. Any shortfalls must be paid before your admission.
If you are having a procedure, ask your consultant’s secretary for the procedure code. Your insurance company will likely need this. Keep in mind that your insurer may not cover your stay if they decide it’s not medically necessary, or they may only pay part of your hospital stay. It’s important to confirm these details with your insurance company before your hospitalisation.

Five very important questions to ask your insurance company:
- What is the start date of my cover?
- What is the name of my plan?
- Do waiting periods apply to my policy at the moment?
- Is there an excess/shortfall payable by me to the hospital on the day of my treatment?
- Am I covered for my treatment? E.g. I am having Orthopaedic Surgery in Bon Secours Hospital in two weeks time, am I covered for this treatment at this time?
Our Admission Team will gladly help you with any insurance queries that you may have. In instances where there is an excess or shortfall on your policy, you will be required to pay this on admission to the hospital.
Patient Responsibility
You are financially responsible for the services you receive. All fees must be paid at the time of service unless your insurance company is paying directly. In such cases, you’ll need to sign an insurance claim form.
Remember, you are responsible for any charges that aren’t covered by your insurance. On the day of your admission, make sure to bring your Health Insurance Provider Plan name and membership number.
Payment for Specific Services
For certain services like mammograms, ultrasounds, and consultant surgeon fees, you will need to pay on the day of your appointment. You can submit these expenses to your insurer as part of your outpatient claim.
If you need a biopsy or fine needle aspiration, your insurance may cover it, depending on your level of coverage.
