Mr Myles Myers is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, practising at Bon Secours Hospital Galway, Galway University Hospital, and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe. Since 2011, he has also been a Lecturer in Surgery at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Mr Myers has gained international recognition for his expertise in colorectal and general surgery, particularly in minimally invasive techniques.
Mr Myers’ major areas of expertise lie in minimally invasive laparoscopic colorectal surgery, including procedures for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and rectal prolapse. He is also highly skilled in managing pelvic floor dysfunction, including faecal incontinence and evacuatory disorders. Mr Myers has extensive experience treating complex anal fistulae and pilonidal disease, and he is an expert in haemorrhoidal surgery, offering HALO procedures as well as open and stapled operations.
In addition to his colorectal expertise, Mr Myers performs minimally invasive surgery for a range of general surgical problems, including groin, abdominal wall, and incisional hernias, as well as gallstone disease. He also provides day-case gastroscopy and colonoscopy services for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Mr Myers graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1999 with an M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. He completed the Dublin-based Basic Surgical Training Scheme and subsequently earned an MD in Surgical Oncology at UCD in 2004. His research work was recognised with prestigious awards, including the Patey Prize (2005) from the Society of Academic and Research Surgeons and the Ronald Raven Prize (2005) from the British Association of Surgical Oncology. His work on surgical oncology also led to numerous speaking invitations from prominent surgical organisations in the UK, USA, and Europe.
Mr Myers completed his Higher Surgical Training in Colorectal and General Surgery before pursuing an advanced fellowship in laparoscopic colorectal and pelvic floor surgery at Concord and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Ireland in 2011 to his current roles.
Mr Myers is recognised as an international expert on diverticular disease and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers, including seminal research on laparoscopic lavage for perforated diverticular disease, published in the British Journal of Surgery in 2007. This research is highly cited and has led to three randomised controlled trials on the topic. His contributions have been honoured with awards such as the Bengt Ihre lectureship and medal from the Swedish Surgical Society in 2009 and the IJMS Doctor Award for Surgical Paper of the Year in 2008.
Mr Myers remains actively involved in clinical research, particularly in the areas of colorectal surgery and diverticular disease, and is frequently invited to present his findings at prestigious conferences around the world.
