Appointments offered:
Triple Assessment Clinic - Thursday PM
In line with the National Cancer Care Plan (NCCP 2021) guidelines, women with symptoms and signs that merit urgent assessment are offered an appointment at a triple assessment clinic. Not all patients who are referred will require a triple assessment.
The Triple Assessment Clinic consists of a clinical assessment by a breast specialist followed by breast imaging. This includes a Tomosynthesis 3D mammogram (for patients aged 35 and older), ultrasound and, if an abnormality is detected, a needle biopsy.
Breast Surgery Clinic - Tuesday PM
New surgical, family history, results and review patients are seen in this clinic. You may be offered an appointment to meet a breast specialist in the first instance and imaging recommendations guided by assessment as necessary.
Breast Imaging
Based on the information in the referral, your GP may have only specifically requested breast mammogram.
Breast Cancer Care
Bon Secours practices comprehensive and contemporary care guided by national and international guidelines for breast cancer management. We offer consultant led clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging and surgical oncology services.
This includes breast oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery aimed at preserving and restoring the natural shape of the breast. Techniques offered include breast reduction, lipofiling and implant based reconstruction following mastectomy.
Onward referral to Medical and Radiation oncology can be facilitated if required.

Tomosynthesis mammogram
Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) is an advanced, high-accuracy breast imaging technique that uses low-dose X-rays to create 3D, layered images, reducing the impact of overlapping tissue.
- Limerick

Ultrasound
Uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image of the breast. It is not an x-ray. It is painless and only takes a few minutes to do. If you are under 35, you are more likely to have an ultrasound rather than a mammogram.
- Limerick
-
Biopsies
Your breast surgeon will determine which biopsy technique is most suitable for you.
- Limerick
-
Ultrasound guided core biopsy
Uses a needle to take a sample of tissue from a lump or an abnormal area. The procedure is performed by the radiologist under ultrasound guidance.
- Limerick
-
Stereotactic core biopsy
Similar to a core biopsy except that it is done by the radiologist under mammogram guidance.
- Limerick
-
Cyst aspiration
A simple procedure done by the radiologist to remove fluid, under ultrasound guidance. A needle will be inserted into the cyst and the fluid drained into the syringe. A plaster will be applied.
