Dr Stephen Tuohy

About

Dr Tuohy is a highly qualified cardiologist with a strong academic and clinical background. He graduated from the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland, Galway, in 2009, where he was awarded the gold medal in paediatrics. Dr Tuohy also holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Clinical Research from NUI Galway, and a Doctorate of Medicine from University College Dublin, based on his research into the genetic basis of sudden cardiac death in young people in Ireland. He has numerous presentations and peer-reviewed publications in cardiac electrophysiology.

Postgraduate Training and Specialist Qualifications

Dr Tuohy began his postgraduate clinical training in the Galway region before entering Higher Specialist Training in Cardiology with the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, of which he is a member. In 2018, he completed a two-year Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, gaining advanced electrophysiology training in a high-volume procedural centre of excellence.

Professional Appointments and Experience

Following his fellowship, Dr Tuohy was appointed as an Attending Cardiac Electrophysiologist at Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine, and also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University in Boston, USA. In 2020, he returned to Ireland and was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Limerick from 2020 to 2021.

Dr Tuohy currently holds consultant appointments at several leading hospitals, including Bon Secours Hospital Limerick at Barringtons, Bon Secours Hospital Galway, Beacon Hospital Dublin, and Blackrock Health at Galway Clinic

Areas of Interest

Investigation and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and of all suspected cardiac arrhythmias. 

Preventive cardiology. Coronary artery disease. Heart failure management. Non-invasive cardiac imaging. Invasive diagnostic procedures. Cardioversion of arrhythmia. 

Risk stratification for coronary disease / Sudden Cardiac Death. 

Management of atrial fibrillation.

Additional Information

Dr Tuohy specialises in ablation of conditions including Atrial fibrillation (AF), Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), Wolff Parkinson White (WPW), Premature ventricular contractions (PVC), Ventricular tachycardia (VT).

Dr Tuohy also specialises in the implantation, management, and removal of cardiac implantable electronic devices (including leadless pacemakers, subcutaneous implantable defibrillators)

Other interests include preventive and diagnostic cardiology, non-invasive imaging, and coronary angiography.
