Advanced training in minimally invasive (“keyhole”) structural heart procedures including TAVI, transcatheter valve repair and valve replacement for patients with complex valvular heart disease.
Comprehensive assessment and management of a broad range of cardiovascular conditions including chest pain, shortness of breath, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias and preventative cardiology.
Accredited in advanced echocardiography and Cardiac CT imaging, with expertise in non-invasive cardiac assessment and procedural planning.
Specialist expertise in coronary angiography, angioplasty and stent placement for the treatment of coronary artery disease and heart attacks, including emergency cardiac intervention for blocked coronary arteries.
Dr Cormac O Connor is a consultant cardiologist, specialising in interventional cardiology (stent placement) and structural cardiology (keyhole valve repair and replacement).
After completing a degree in pharmaceutical science, he was a member of the first intake of medical students in UL in 2007, and graduated with honours in 2011. During his cardiology training, he worked in major teaching hospitals across Ireland including University Hospital Limerick, St James Hospital, Beaumont Hospital and Tallaght Hospital. Over this time, he published over 20 papers in international peer reviewed journals.
Dr O’Connor travelled to St Michaels Hospital in Toronto for sub-speciality cardiology training through the University of Toronto. For two years, his training focused on emergency care of heart attacks and treating blockages of the arteries of the heart. Additionally, his training included state-of-the-art keyhole treatments for heart valve problems such as TAVI alongside other structural interventions such as heart valve repair.
Dr Cormac O'Connor is practicing as a consultant cardiologist in University Hospital Limerick since August 2022 and has joined the Bon Secours Hospital's cardiology team in Limerick in early 2026.
Dr Cormac O’Connor lives with his wife and four children in Limerick. He is a keen sportsperson, and currently enjoys distance running.
