Mr Patrick O’Malley is a Consultant Urologist, practising since 2007, and originally hails from the Connemara Gaeltacht. He graduated in medicine from University College Galway (UCG) in 1996. Mr O'Malley is a pioneer in robotic surgery, establishing Ireland’s first Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy program in 2007. To date, he has performed over 1,500 robotic-assisted procedures. He was appointed Consultant Urologist to Galway University Hospital in 2012 and launched a Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy program there in 2018. Currently, he serves as the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) prostate cancer lead for the Saolta Hospital Group and is the Director of Robotic Surgery at Galway University Hospital. Mr O'Malley also mentors the robotic surgery fellow and holds an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer position at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).
Mr O’Malley completed his basic surgical training at University College Hospital Galway before pursuing higher surgical training in Urology in the UK, earning his FRCS (Urol) in 2005. He further specialised by completing a fellowship in Urological Oncology and Robotic Assisted Surgery in Melbourne in 2007, before returning to Ireland to establish his innovative robotic surgery program.
Mr O’Malley specialises in Urological Oncology and Robotic Assisted Surgery, particularly in the field of radical prostatectomy. His expertise lies in the minimally invasive treatment of prostate cancer through the use of robotic-assisted techniques. He continues to lead advancements in urological cancer care, ensuring that patients have access to cutting-edge treatments.
