Surgical Assessment Unit | Bon Secours Hospital Cork

Admission criteria:

Below are the criteria a patient must meet to attend the Surgical Assessment Unit.

• 16-80 years old
• ASA 1-2
• Abdominal pain
  - Appendicitis
  - Diverticulitis
  - Cholecystitis
  - Gastritis / Peptic Ulcer Disease
  - Pancreatitis
  - Jaundice
  - Constipation
• GI Bleed
  - Upper GI Bleed (haemodynamically stable)
  - Lower GI Bleed (haemodynamically stable)
• Abscess (excluding joints/limbs/head&neck)
• Hernias (non strangulated)
• Manchester Triage Category 3 & 4

• >80 year old
• ASA ≥ 3
• Renal Failure
• Adhesional Obstruction
• Hernias (Strangulated)

Patients with the below criteria are unsuitable to attend the Surgical Assessment Unit:

• ‘Blue Light’ Ambulance
• Trauma
• Haemodynamically Unstable
• Bleeding Oesophageal Varices
• Vascular
• Urology / Orthopaedic /
• Plastic / ENT Emergencies
• Manchester Triage System Category 1 & 2

The following are the fees for the Surgical Assessment Unit at Bon Secours Hospital Cork:

Consult Fee: €165 – this fee applies whether admitted or not.

Diagnostic Fees are capped at €385 – only applies if not admitted.

Total Fees are capped at €550.
