Dr Ronan Kavanagh is an experienced Consultant Rheumatologist who has been practising in Galway since 1999. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Galway and a former president of the Irish Society for Rheumatology. Dr Kavanagh is known for his innovative approach to medical education and his commitment to advancing rheumatological care. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Bone Density Unit at Bon Secours Hospital, where he plays a key role in osteoporosis diagnosis and management.
Dr Kavanagh graduated from the University of Galway (NUIG) in 1989. He completed his specialist training in rheumatology in the UK in 1998 and earned his medical doctorate (MD Thesis) in the same year. His postgraduate training was carried out in Belfast, Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, where he gained extensive experience in rheumatology.
Dr Kavanagh’s clinical expertise spans a broad range of rheumatological conditions, with a special interest in osteoporosis, musculoskeletal symptoms in musicians, and the use of technology in patient care. He runs a busy infusion unit and joint injection service, providing cutting-edge treatments to his patients. Dr Kavanagh is also heavily involved in patient education, using social media to support and inform patients.
Throughout his career, Dr Kavanagh has published widely on topics including diet and arthritis, joint infections in arthritis, and cartilage damage in arthritis, the subject of his MD Thesis. More recently, his research has focused on the impact of COVID-19 infections on Irish rheumatology patients. He also regularly contributes to the medical press and organises an annual medical conference aimed at fostering curiosity and education among doctors.
Dr Kavanagh's specialist training in rheumatology took place in East Anglia, with training at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, further enhancing his expertise in rheumatological care.
