Mr Khalid Kamel

Mr Khalid Kamel is a Consultant Eye Surgeon and a Cataract and Glaucoma Specialist based at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork specialising in complex Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery.

His experience extends over 15 years, employing various conventional and recently developed surgical approaches for management of complex Glaucoma.

He has dual qualifications from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland RCSI including a Fellowship in Ophthalmic Surgery FRCSI(Ophth) and Membership in General Surgery MRCSI. He is a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology FEBO.

Mr Kamel has won research awards and Medals and has peer reviewed and published in several major Ophthalmology journals (e.g. IOVS, Eye). He obtained a lab based MD degree in Medicine from the University College of Dublin UCD in 2019 looking at Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Lamina Cribrosa cells of Glaucoma subjects. He has been invited to speak internationally and has presented his work over 3 continents.

He underwent his extensive Ophthalmology training in Ireland obtaining CSCST in Ophthalmic Surgery from the RCSI in 2022 followed by a year as a senior clinical glaucoma fellow at the prestigious Manchester Royal Eye Hospital learning from internationally recognised experts in Glaucoma surgery.

Mr Kamel received the Professional Certificate in Healthcare Management Practice with Distinction from the respected UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business.

He has 3 years of experience as a Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at UCD followed by 2 years as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield.  He has also been an NHS Consultant in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals for 2 years.

Mr Kamel is on the Specialist Register in the UK and Ireland and is a recognised trainer in Ophthalmology by GMC and the Irish College of Ophthalmologists.
