Professor John P. McCabe is a highly experienced Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in spine, hip, and knee surgery. He currently holds positions at Bon Secours Hospital and Galway University Hospitals and serves as a Professor of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at NUI Galway. Prof. McCabe is also the President of The Irish Spine Society, highlighting his leadership in the field.
Prof. McCabe graduated with honours from NUI Galway in 1985, where he was awarded first place in his class. He went on to complete his F.R.C.S.I. in 1989, followed by a Master of Medical Science (1989) and a Master in Surgery (1990) from NUI Galway. He earned his F.R.C.S. (Orth) in 1993 and obtained a Certificate of Accreditation in Orthopaedic Surgery from the Intercollegiate Board in 1994.
Prof. McCabe completed two prestigious fellowships at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, specialising in Spine Surgery (1995) and Joint Reconstructive Surgery (1996), which provided him with comprehensive expertise in these fields. In 2017, he was appointed as a Personal Professor in Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at NUI Galway.
Having commenced practice in Galway in 1996, Prof. McCabe is the longest-serving spine surgeon in the Irish public healthcare system. His clinical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of spine conditions, including traumatic, degenerative, tumour-related, and deformity cases. He has pioneered various technologies in spinal surgery, including anterior and posterior cervical fixation and percutaneous spinal surgery. Prof. McCabe has particular expertise in managing complex spinal conditions, especially in patients with a history of prior surgery.
In addition to his spinal practice, Prof. McCabe has extensive experience in hip and knee surgery, owing to his dual fellowship training at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. His expertise in these areas allows him to manage musculoskeletal conditions that are often difficult to diagnose and treat.
Prof. McCabe is actively involved in ongoing research and teaching, particularly in the field of spinal surgery. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and has co-authored book chapters on spinal surgery and arthroplasty. He frequently presents his research at national and international conferences, contributing significantly to advancements in orthopaedic and spinal care.
