Mr Thavakumar MB (NUI), MCh, MD, FRCSI is a Consultant Otolaryngologist (ENT) Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon. He graduated from the National University of Ireland Galway and completed his ENT surgical training (SpR) in Ireland. He was awarded a Fellowship in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is appointed as an ENT and cancer surgeon at Galway University Hospital and Bon Secours Hospital Galway. Mr Thavakumar is a leading cancer surgeon managing patients with complex, advanced head and neck cancer. He also runs a well-established ENT practice in the west of Ireland.
Mr Thavakumar completed his basic and higher surgical training in Ireland. He completed his Membership Exams in both Surgery and ENT Surgery. He then completed his higher surgical training and fellowship exams. His subspecialty fellowship training is in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery, completed at the McGill University Health Centre, Montreal, Canada.
He holds a Master’s degree in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Trinity College Dublin for his clinical research in neuromodulation. During his surgical training, he was appointed as a clinical lecturer in ENT at both the Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin. He currently serves as the Deputy Training Programme Director for ENT Training for the Republic of Ireland.
Mr Thavakumar subspecialty interest is in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery. This includes advanced skin cancer, throat cancer and salivary gland cancer. He also manages patients requiring thyroid and parathyroid surgery. His ENT practice is for both adults and children. This would include adeno-tonsillectomy, grommets, sinus surgery, septoplasty and other common ENT conditions.
