Prof. Walshe has extensive experience and involvement in ongoing research in all aspects of Otolaryngology/Head and neck surgery. His particular areas of interests include Hearing loss in children, Cochlear implantation, Salivary gland disorders and tumours, Thyroid and parathyroid surgery, Nasal and sinus surgery.

Prof. Walshe is currently Director of the National Cochlear Implant Programme based in Beaumont Hospital.
