Dr. Maeve Durkan is an honours graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She initially trained in Diabetes & Endocrinology in the UK, followed by a second residency in Internal Medicine at St. Raphael’s Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine, USA. Dr. Durkan then completed a fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at Brown University School of Medicine, USA.
She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Dr. Durkan was awarded a Master’s in Clinical Education from NUI Galway in 2012 and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2013. More recently, in 2022, she was elected as a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and served as a reviewer for the new EASD-ESC Guidelines, published in 2023.
Currently, Dr. Durkan is a Consultant Endocrinologist in full time clinical practice at BSH Cork, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at University College Cork (UCC), and also lectures for the UCC School of Pharmacy.
She is actively involved in clinical research and has presented at both American and European international scientific meetings. In September 2023, she presented two papers at the IFSO meeting in Miami, USA, and in September 2025 , presented three papers at IFSO in Melbourne, Australia, reflecting her recent work in the field of bariatric medicine. She has 2 papers currently under review for IFSO 2026.
Dr. Durkan was elected President of the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) Board of Endocrinology in 2018 and re-elected to a second term in 2022. In 2023, the UEMS and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) launched the first joint European Board Exam in Endocrinology and Diabetes (EBEEDM). Dr Durkan was elected Co-Chair of the joint UEMS ESE European Board Exam ( EBEEDM) in June 2025.
Dr. Durkan was re-elected for a second term as Vice Chair of UEMS CESMA (Council for European Specialists Medical Assessments) in 2020 and subsequently elected President of CESMA in 2022. CESMA advises on the development and delivery of all European Board Specialty exams.
In 2021, she was elected Chair of the UEMS Medical Sub-specialties Group 1. In October 2023, Dr. Durkan was elected Vice President of the UEMS Council.
She was also elected as the new Honorary Secretary of the Irish Endocrine Society (IES) in November 2023 and was nominated to run for President of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) in 2023.
Dr. Durkan is actively involved in the ESE postgraduate training program . She was elected to the ESE Education Committee where she currently serves She is a co-author of the UEMS ETR (European Training Requirements) in Diabetes & Endocrinology, which was ratified at the UEMS Council meeting in 2017. She is also a co-author of the new UEMS-ESE Curriculum, ( Endocrinology Society of Endocrinology Curriculum and Training Recommendation in Endocrinology) which was accepted for publication in the European Journal of Endocrinology ( EJE) in 2024. She is co-author in the paper on post graduate training ( Postgraduate training and continuous medical education in endocrinology in Europe,) published in EJE 2025
She has now just collaborated on another paper ‘ Recognition and accreditation of post graduate Training centres in Endocrinology in Europe , which has been submitted to Endocrine Connections ( February 2026).
She is is a member of ESC ( European Society of Cardiology ) faculty where she has been an abstract reviewer since 2023, and chairs several sessions at the annual scientific meetings . She has been chosen as a n abstract reviewer by the American endocrine society for its upcoming American Society Annual 2026 scientific meeting .
Dr. Durkan is deeply committed to patient care and to maintaining the highest standards in the practice and delivery of endocrinology care in Ireland and across Europe.
