Professor Egan is an experienced Consultant Clinical Pharmacologist and Gastroenterologist with a strong academic and clinical background. He graduated from University College Galway (UCG) in 1990 with an M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O., and completed his internship, house officer, and registrar training at University College Hospital Galway. In 1992, he received Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), followed by a Master’s in Medical Science from UCG in 1994.
From 1994 to 1999, Prof. Egan trained at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, specialising in Internal Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology, and Gastroenterology. He received American Board certification in all three disciplines. In 1999, he was conferred with an MD from NUI Galway and subsequently completed post-doctoral training from 2000 to 2002 in the Laboratory of Mucosal Immunology at the University of California, San Diego. He then returned to the Mayo Clinic as a Consultant in Gastroenterology, with a joint appointment in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Prof. Egan’s research focuses on the molecular characterisation of signalling pathways involved in intestinal epithelial cell stress, death, and malignant transformation. He has made significant contributions to both clinical practice and scientific research. In 2005, he was recruited by NUI Galway and the Health Service Executive Western Region as Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Consultant Clinical Pharmacologist. He also became Head of the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at NUI Galway.
Prof. Egan specialises in clinical pharmacology and gastroenterology, with extensive experience in internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and molecular research related to gastrointestinal diseases. He is dedicated to advancing patient care through his clinical practice and ongoing research.
