About

Professor John Burke is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon who offers expert care for a wide range of conditions, from common concerns like hernias and gallbladder problems to complex bowel disorders. In this regard, he has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery and the treatment of colorectal conditions, including colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. His approach is centred on providing clear, compassionate, and tailored care using the most up-to-date surgical techniques. 

Prof Burke graduated with honours from University College Dublin and completed his specialist surgical training in Ireland. He then undertook two internationally respected fellowships in the United States—at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, focusing on IBD and complex re-operative surgery, and at Florida Hospital, Orlando, where he specialised in advanced minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. Since his appointment to Beaumont Hospital in 2015, he has led a busy and respected surgical practice. He also plays a key role in advancing colorectal care, serving as a clinical lead for rectal cancer care and as a clinical associate professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).  

Prof Burke is active in both research and international clinical leadership. He has published over 180 research papers and book chapters and is an editor for the journal Colorectal Disease. He contributes to European guidelines on the treatment of rectal cancer and IBD through his work with the European Society of Coloproctology and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization.
