Professor Keogh graduated with honours from the National University of Ireland, Galway, in 1992. He is currently Professor and Head of Discipline of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (ORL) Surgery at NUI Galway and Galway University Hospitals. Actively involved in both research and teaching, Professor Keogh instructs undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing significantly to the field of ORL surgery.
Professor Keogh completed his speciality training through The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, as part of the Irish Higher Surgical Training Programme in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. From 2000 to 2002, he undertook a research fellowship at the Department of Genetics, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, USA. His research focused on the molecular genetics of hearing loss and craniofacial abnormalities, for which he was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine in 2006.
In 2006, Professor Keogh earned both the Intercollegiate Speciality Certificate and Certificates of Specialist Training. He subsequently completed clinical fellowships in Otology and Anterior Skull Base Surgery at the Portmann Institute in Bordeaux, France, and at University Hospital Insespital in Bern, Switzerland.
Professor Keogh's research interests include the molecular genetics of hearing loss, safe surgery with a focus on human factors, and nano-biophotonics in head and neck cancer. He has published numerous international peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has been the recipient and manager of several academic research grants. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Benjamins Prize for research by the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum (CORLAS).
Professor Keogh performs all aspects of paediatric, adult, and general ORL surgery. His special interests include chronic ear disease (otology), hearing loss, diseases of the nose (rhinology), throat (laryngology), and care for children with special needs.
