Mr Francis O'Neill began his career as an Orthopaedic Consultant in 2020 with a subspecialist area of interest in primary total hip and knee replacements. Mr O'Neill is a Limerick native who studied medicine at University College Cork. Following his intern year, Mr O'Neill completed the basic surgical training programme in the Midwestern region before proceeding to work in majority of the major trauma centres in the country. Mr O'Neill completed a research Master's of Surgery at the University of Limerick and he was the first person to achieve this with their medical school when he was conferred in 2011. Mr O’Neill has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals, along with presentations at national and international meetings.
Mr. O’Neill completed the higher surgical training programme in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery from 2013 to 2019 and he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI) in 2018 upon completion of the examination process at the end of this programme. Mr O’Neill then undertook an Arthroplasty Fellowship at Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast under the guidance of Prof. D. Beverland and Mr. D. Molloy from 2019 to 2020. Upon completing this fellowship, Mr O’Neill worked as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Dublin and Galway before returning to Limerick in 2021.In that time, Mr O’Neill has performed numerous primary total hip or knee replacements along with multiple trauma procedures as part of his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospital Limerick. trauma commitment at UHL. In relation to the arthroplasty procedures,Mr O'Neill's preference is for uncemented Total Hip and Knee Replacements using implants that are manufactured here in Ireland.
