The RTÉ Today Show featured an interview this week with Dr Deirdre O'Mahony, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Bon Secours Hospital Cork, about developments in cancer prevention and treatment.
Dr O'Mahony offered viewers practical advice on how to reduce cancer risk. These steps include staying active, limiting ultra-processed food and alcohol, and taking up screening and vaccination programmes.
Developments highlighted during the interview, such as immunotherapy, CAR T-cell therapy and antibody-drug conjugates, are expanding treatment options for certain cancers and improving long-term outcomes for patients. Dr O'Mahony also outlined progress in treating conditions such as metastatic melanoma and triple-negative breast cancer, which is particularly relevant during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
While not all cancers can be prevented, informed lifestyle choices, vaccination and screening can all play important roles in reducing risk and supporting earlier detection.
The interview concludes with Dr O'Mahony and presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Sinead Kennedy encouraging the public to attend screenings or visit their GP to access supports.
