Hospital Access Unit (HAU)

Our Hospital Access Unit (HAU) at Bon Secours Hospital Limerick provides consultant-delivered, same or next day assessment, investigation and treatment of patients referred by their GP. This service is designed to give patients expert medical care in a safe and comfortable environment. Every patient is seen by an Emergency Medicine consultant, supported by a dedicated nursing and healthcare team, with access to full diagnostic services including laboratory testing, X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound.

If you or an adult family member is unwell, suffering from a medical issue, or needs timely hospital admission, speak to your General Practitioner (GP) about a referral to the HAU at Bon Secours Hospital Limerick. 

Patients meeting the unit’s inclusion criteria are offered an appointment following referral from their GP. Referral is made by the GP via telephone to a HAU clinical nurse manager, with subsequent submission of a referral letter by Healthlink or email. Once your GP referral is received, our medical team will contact you by phone to arrange your admission.

Please note that admission to the unit is by appointment only. No walk-in patients will be accepted.  

All patients are assessed by a consultant in Emergency Medicine and, following investigation and initial treatment, are either admitted to the hospital or discharged home. A proportion of discharged patients will be referred for specialist outpatient follow-up as required.

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

Our advanced Diagnostic Imaging service plays an essential role in delivering faster, safer and more accurate care for both inpatients and outpatients. In partnership with Alliance Medical, Europe’s leading provider of imaging services, we offer a full range of advanced imaging including CT, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, DEXA, mammography, and the region’s first PET-CT scanner. These technologies support consultants in diagnosing conditions earlier, planning treatment, and providing reassurance through clear, timely results. 

Advanced diagnostic imaging also expands capacity and reduce waiting times, ensuring patients across Limerick and the wider region can access state-of-the-art diagnostics closer to home.

Cardiac Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab)

The new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab) is central to delivering advanced cardiac care for patients. It is the first private Cath Lab in the Mid-West region. Our expert multidisciplinary teams perform a range of diagnostic and interventional procedures here using the latest imaging technology. 

The lab enables rapid assessment of heart function and coronary arteries through minimally invasive techniques, such as CT coronary angiography and functional MRI testing. By identifying heart disease earlier and guiding precise treatment, the Cath Lab supports faster decision-making, reduced waiting times and improved outcomes, all delivered locally within our new hospital.

Clinical Services Hub

Located directly behind the main hospital with its own carpark, the new Clinical Services Hub has been purpose-built to enhance patient access and continuity of care. It houses state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging on the ground and first floors, directly linking to consultant rooms and the main hospital for seamless care pathways. Patients can see their consultant, have scans or tests on the same day, and receive faster results to guide next steps. 

The Clinical Services Hub also connects to specialist hospital services including the Cardiac Catheterisation Lab, Interventional Vascular Suite and Day Procedure Unit (DPU), ensuring that any follow-up treatment or intervention can take place without delay. Together, these integrated services support a more efficient and reassuring patient experience.
