Your health is an investment and traveling to Bon Secours Hospital Dublin means choosing high quality care that aligns with your medical needs. Located in North Dublin, we recognise that seeking medical procedures elsewhere can require additional effort. However, the advantages will outweigh these as you will gain timely access to specialist consultants and medical treatments.
If you reside in Northern Ireland and are awaiting surgery or a procedure via the NHS or Health & Social Care (HSCNI) Board, you may qualify for the Waiting List Reimbursement Scheme that was launched on the 2nd June 2025. The scheme is based on the previous Republic of Ireland (ROI) Reimbursement Scheme and EU Cross Border Healthcare Directive. It can help you to access necessary procedures more quickly in the Republic of Ireland with surgery expenses covered by the HSCNI in hospitals including Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.
Once you receive approval from the HSCNI Board, you will pay for the treatment upfront and can later claim reimbursement. The amount reimbursed will be the actual cost of treatment or the HSC NI average cost (whichever is lower) provided the treatment is one which the patient would have received within the HSC.
For those who may not qualify for this scheme, there is also the option to pay privately for treatment at Bon Secours Hospital Dublin.
Applying for reimbursement
Our liaison team will provide you with all of the information you will require to complete and submit your application for reimbursement to the HSCNI. It can take up to 20 working days or 4 weeks for a fully completed application form to be processed and a decision made. You should also ensure that you have a valid GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) or EHIC.
If your application is unsuccessful, it is also possible to pay for the procedure privately.

The next steps
Your initial consultation can be held at our hospital in Dublin or at our Consultants Clinic in Cavan, based on your specialty needs and personal preference for convenience. Additionally, they may schedule an appointment for any necessary testing or scans to be done on the same day as your consultation. This appointment is usually within 2 weeks.
During the consultation, the consultant will review the treatment options with you. If you choose to proceed with the recommended option, they will schedule your procedure. The consultant’s secretary will then provide you with essential information, including the date and time of your admission, the expected duration of your hospital stay, and confirmation of what items you should bring with you for your admission.
Depending upon the procedure, you may be invited to attend a pre-assessment clinic. During this visit, you will undergo blood tests, an ECG, and possibly an X-ray, while also meeting with the anaesthetist and nursing team. This will also give you a chance to ask any questions you may have.
Once you have had your procedure and return home, you will be contacted by our liaison team to check your progress. At week 4 - 6 you will return for a final review with your consultant and be discharged back to your referring GP and local Trust.
How much does the procedure cost and payment process?
The total cost of the procedure is dependent upon the tests and the specific procedure you need.
Our liaison team will provide you with a detailed quotation prior to your procedure.
The quote will include:
- Initial consultation with the consultant
- Pre-assessment clinic review
- Consultant and anaesthetist professional fees
- Procedure and hospital stay
- Post operative consultant review
Payment Process
Payment is divided into 2 stages:
- Initial consultation and pre-assessment clinic review
- Procedure, hospital stay etc
Payment in full for both stages is required 7 days prior to appointment/admission.
Once your care is complete, you will be able to submit your claim for reimbursement and you will be provided with a detailed invoice and receipt.
Payment can be made via:
- Bank Transfer
- Visa or Debit Card
