The Pharmacy department in Bon Secours Health System Cork has a large dispensary and a chemotherapy Compounding Unit. All pharmacists are registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.

Welcome to the Pharmacy department, for general enquiries, please contact the dispensary on ext. 1646. Our public opening hours are 9:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday & Saturday 14:00 – 16:30.

Every ward in the Bon Secours Health System receives a daily clinical pharmacist service.

  • Every ward in the Bon Secours Health System receives a daily clinical pharmacist service.
  • A clinical pharmacist has an important role in the patient's hospital journey.
  • Clinical pharmacists ensure safe & effective use of medication, provide drug information & advice, educate prescribers, nurses & patients and prevent medication errors.
  • A clinical pharmacist teaches patients about cardiology medicines at the bi-weekly cardiac rehab education sessions.
  • The Warfarin Clinic is a clinical pharmacist led initiative at the Bon Secours Hospital. The pharmacist monitors the patient's warfarin therapy and recommends individualised dosing regimens based on lab results.
  • The antimicrobial pharmacist works with the clinical microbiology consultants at the Bon Secours Hospital to promote prudent use of antibiotic therapy, prevent resistance, educate prescribers and prepare guidelines to improve antibiotic prescribing.

  • The dispensary staff, comprising of senior pharmacists and technicians, provide an individualised patient dispensing service for in patients and day case patients.
  • Technicians provide a stock top-up service to all clinical areas.
  • Pyxis medstations were installed to ensure accurate medication dispensing and to reduce time to first dose.
  • The pharmacy department is a licensed retail pharmacy, enabling the filling of prescriptions under the Community Drug Schemes e.g. GMS, DPS and LTI.

The two oncology pharmacists clinically check all chemotherapy prescriptions for appropriateness, for patients receiving treatment in the Bon Secours Health System.

  • The two oncology pharmacists clinically check all chemotherapy prescriptions for appropriateness, for patients receiving treatment in the Bon Secours Health System.
  • The pharmacists supervise the manufacture of chemotherapy, by specially trained technicians, in a state of the art classified cleanroom suite.
  • The Oncology ward receives a daily clinical service by a senior oncology pharmacist.
  • The oncology pharmacists work closely with the oncology team, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to treatment within the hospital.
  • The cleanroom suite provides a facility appropriate for participation in oncology clinical trial manufacture.
