Professional Profile

Dr. Barbara Kerkhoff graduated from The Free University of Berlin, Germany in 1989. She commenced her specilized registrar training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology under the founding specialist of Perinatal Medicine Prof. Erich Saling at the Women's Hospital in Neukoelln, Berlin. In 1994 she achieved her M.D. at The Free University of Berlin through clinical research in ‘Management of pre labour rupture of membranes.’
 

For further training in view of Female Incontinence and Pelvic Floor disorders she worked in the Urogynaecological Department of the Charite under Prof. Wolfgang Fischer.
 

After completion of specialty training in 1998 she worked as a junior Consultant in Berlin. In 2001 she took a Senior Registrar post in Cork covering Erinville, St. Finbarrs & CUH. Since 2005 she has worked as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and is in private practice at The Bon Secours Hospital Cork since 2009. She is a Senior Lecturer for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in UCC, Cork.

 

Special Interests

Minimal invasive surgery, vaginal and abdominal surgey, coloscopy (working with Cervicalcheck.ie), adolescent gynaecology, menstrual disorders.

Biography

Suzanne graduated from UCD Medical School in 1992. In 1996 she went to the Rosie Maternity in Cambridge from where she won a place on the East Anglia training scheme. After developing an interest in pelvic floor problems she undertook a 2 year clinical research post at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles St., looking at connective tissues in the pelvic floor. She subsequently trained in Southampton and Basingstoke before starting her first consultant post at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in 2002. She ran the high risk antenatal clinic there and set up a dedicated specialist multidisciplinary pelvic floor service including conservative and surgical treatments for women with incontinence and prolapse.

In 2006 she received a call from home and started her second consultant post in the Unified Maternity Services in Cork, working at the Bons, Erinville and St Finbarrs prior to the opening of CUMH.

She specialises in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a subspecialty interest in Urogynaecology. She runs the Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury clinic at CUMH where all women are seen and scanned after third degree tears. Her research interests include specialist physiotherapy for pelvic pain, pelvic floor injury and it’s prevention during childbirth, and robotic surgery for prolapse. She has been guest speaker at many international meetings

As Associate Dean of specialist training for O and G at the RCPI, she is closely involved in training our future specialists. She was also recently elected Chair of the Continence Foundation of Ireland.

A graduate of both the Science Faculty (Genetics) and Medical School of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Waterstone's career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology began at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. He continued his training at teaching hospitals in London. His interest in Reproductive Medicine developed at the Hammersmith Hospital while working with Professor Robert Winston. A research fellowship at the Assisted Conception Unit, Kings College Hospital then followed.

Having completed his specialist training in London, Dr Waterstone was attracted to Cork by the possibility of establishing an effective fertility service. His consultant gynaecological practice at the Bon Secours Hospital is centred on the investigation and management of subfertility and of menorrhagia. His personal involvement in ultrasonography, hysterosalpingography and laparoscopy assures his patients appropriate treatment, accurate diagnosis and continuity of care. The challenging fertility enhancing surgery he carries out for multiple fibroids and severe endometriosis is facilitated by the efficiency of the operating theatres at the Bons, and by the support of high calibre surgical and radiological consultant colleagues.

He is the founder and Medical Director of Waterstone Clinic, providing fertility services in Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Limerick, Waterford. Dr Waterstone is committed to leading change in Reproductive Medicine in Ireland. Dr Waterstone was also a Consultant in Obstetrics at Cork University Maternity Hospital until 2018 where he delivered over 7,000 babies and was involved in undergraduate and post graduate medical education.
