Mr Tomás Burke is a Consultant Ophthalmologist sub-specialising in the management of Cataract, Uveitis (inflammatory eye disease), and Medical Retina. He sees and manages patients with the full range of medical retina disorders including wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic eye disease and inherited retinal diseases.
At the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Dublin, he is the lead for the Intravitreal Injection service focusing on delivering care to patients with conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetes. He is heavily involved in the training of non-consultant hospital doctors in training in Ophthalmology, including surgical skills and management of retinal disorders.
His Ophthalmology training was carried out in Ireland, as well as in the Oxford and Severn regions in the UK. He completed a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Prior to taking up his consultant post in Dublin, he was a consultant at the Bristol Eye Hospital, UK from 2018-2021.
He has extensive experience in the use of retinal imaging in clinical practice, as well as imaging research, having completed a Doctor of Medicine research degree at Columbia University, New York in the field of inherited retinal degeneration. For this work he was awarded a research Doctor of Medicine.
He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and has presented at conferences both nationally and internationally. He has previously been Principal and sub-investigator on several studies in the field of medical retina. These trials have focused on novel treatments for wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, diabetic maculopathy and retinopathy (including sub-threshold laser therapy), as well as in the field of Uveitis. He also served as National Institute for Health Research Local Clinical Research lead for Ophthalmology (West of England) during his time in the UK. He also serves as a reviewer for several research journals in the fields of ophthalmology and vision sciences.
