Professor Aoife Lowery is a Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon with extensive expertise in breast disease and breast cancer management. A medical graduate of the University of Galway and Gold Medal in Surgery recipient, she specialises in both screening and symptomatic populations. She is also an academic leader and researcher, serving as Director of the Clinical Research Facility and Principal Investigator at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at the University of Galway.
Professor Lowery completed her surgical training on the RCSI Higher Surgical Training Programme and undertook an international fellowship at Hopitaux Universitaires de Marseille (AP-HM) in France. She was awarded the prestigious Dr Richard Steeven’s Scholarship for Overseas Training during her fellowship. She also holds a PhD, completed through the Molecular Medicine Ireland Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme in 2009, with a focus on breast and endocrine surgery.
Professor Lowery specialises in breast disease and breast cancer management, utilising advanced surgical techniques such as stereotactic surgery, sentinel lymph node assessment, oncoplastic surgery, and immediate breast reconstruction. In endocrine surgery, her expertise extends to thyroid and parathyroid surgery, including minimal access approaches for both benign and malignant diseases.
Professor Lowery has made significant contributions to cancer research, authoring over 140 peer-reviewed publications. Her research has earned her numerous accolades, including the Sir Robert Smith Medal from the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Millin Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She is currently a recipient of the Irish Cancer Society Clinical Research Leadership Award and is a Principal Investigator in the Women’s Health Initiative cancer survivorship programme, co-funded by the Irish Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
In addition to her clinical and research work, Professor Lowery is involved in academic leadership as Director of the Clinical Research Facility, Associate Director of the Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) programme, and mentor for the Bioinnovate Programme at the University of Galway.
