Bon Secours Health System has announced funding of €24,000 for an innovative Palliative Care project in Uganda, in partnership with Trocaire.

The Hospital group will support a project which works with the terminally ill, where a nurse travels to remote areas and tends to the sick through a series of roadside clinics.  Uganda is one of the world’s poorest countries, with an average income of just $27 per person per year being spent on healthcare, whereas in Ireland, we spend $4239 per person per annum.  With a population of 41 million people, and with 1.5 million living with HIV, it is estimated that there is a need for end of life care for 300,000 people annually.

Bon Secours Health System is delighted to partner with Trocaire for this much needed project.  Trocaire have been working in Uganda since the 1970’s and will oversee the delivery of the project.

The project is expected to support 4000 terminally ill people in 2018.

Eoin Wrenn Head of East Africa Region for Trocaire  said “ Trocaire are delighted to partner with the Bons for this project; this donation will go a long way towards helping some of the most vulnerable people in the world.”

Bon Secours Health System invests significantly in charitable causes through its Community Fund, which it sees as a means of translating its ethos of care into action for the wider local community, and beyond.
Andrew McCarthy, BSHS Group Mission Director commented “While our care within Bon Secours Health System is summed up by our brand line ‘advanced medicine exceptional care’, we see our ‘care’ going beyond the walls of our hospitals through our Community Initiative Funding program.  This project aligns very much with our mission and values, and we are privileged to be in a position to assist the poor and vulnerable of Uganda.”

Bon Secours Health System, through its Hospitals in Tralee, Galway, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and it’s Care Village in Cork, has invested €560,000.00 in 2017, in worthwhile projects that add value to the lives of the most vulnerable in society, and that bring about a social good.
