The AMAU is an Emergency Medicine Consultant led service for patients with medical conditions requiring rapid assessment, investigation, treatment, and if need be, hospital admission.
Care in the Acute Medical Assessment Unit at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin is delivered by a team of Emergency Medicine Consultants and experienced nurses who assess, treat and admit patients with a variety of acute medical complaints.
If you or a family member over the age of 16 is unwell, suffering from a medical issue or need timely hospital admission, speak to your GP about a referral to the AMAU at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin. Once your referral is received from your GP, our medical team will contact you by phone to arrange your admission.
If you do not have a GP or are unable to attend your GP, you can also attend the AMAU at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin. Please ring our medical team in advance of attending the unit on 01 806 5444 and they will confirm your suitability to attend the unit and also confirm an appointment time for you to attend the unit.
Please note that admission to the unit is by appointment only. No walk-in patients will be accepted.

The lead Emergency Medical Consultant is Dr. Michael Quirke, who works alongside his Emergency Medicine Consultant colleagues Dr Kraigher O' Keeffe and Dr Stuart Carr, Dr Saas Hayes, Medical Registrars, Physician Associate and an experienced team of Nurses and Care Assistants.

On arrival to the hospital at the specified time, you will be admitted to the unit and have an initial consultation with one of the team who will arrange the appropriate investigations and treatment as indicated. The aim is to complete all tests and investigations within a short stay in the unit and depending on the outcome, you may be admitted to the hospital or alternatively discharged back to the care of your GP.
Dr Carr graduated from UCD in 1999, completed a Diploma in Medical Toxicology University of Wales 2002 and is a member of the RCSI (Edinburgh) 2003. He completed his training in Emergency Medicine in Ireland and Dallas (Texas) between 2000 and 2010 and has worked as an Emergency Medicine Physician across a number of hospitals since then. He achieved his ACEP Teaching Fellowship (Dallas) in 2009.
Dr. Quirke graduated from NUI Galway in 2003 and completed Higher Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine in 2016. He published his research doctorate (MD) in 2016, has authored over 20 peer reviewed publications. He was appointed as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospital in 2016 and is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the RCSI.
All patients must have an appointment to attend the unit.
If you are referred by your GP, our team will ring you as soon as your referral is received to confirm an appointment time. In most cases this will be on the day the referral is received but may also be on the next working day.
If you are a patient who may not have been to see a GP and / or may not have a GP, please ring our medical team on 01 806 5444 and they will chat to you about your admission and confirm an appointment time.
If you are a GP and wish to admit a patient to the AMAU, you can forward a referral via Healthlink or securely from your Healthmail email account to dmau@bonsecours.ie. You can also ring the AMAU medical team on 01 806 5444. The admission team will then contact your patient with an admission day and time and confirm this with you.

The initial attendance fee is €250 (non refundable) up to a maximum fee of €750. Patients will be charged according to the diagnostic test carried out which may include laboratory investigations, diagnostic imaging or non invasive cardiology investigations as prescribed by the consultant.
If a patient is admitted to the hospital, they will be refunded any amount they have paid over the attendance fee of €250 plus any individual policy excess where applicable.
Scheduled review fee in the AMAU is €80.
