Professor Aoife Lowery

Professor Aoife Lowery practices as a Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon at Bon Secours Hospital Galway and Galway University Hospital (Breastcheck Western Unit). A medical graduate of the University of Galway and Gold Medal in Surgery recipient, Professor Lowery completed her surgical training on the RCSI Higher Surgical Training Programme with International fellowship in AP-HM (Hopitaux Universitaires de Marseille) France for which she was awarded the Dr Richard Steeven’s Scholarship for Overseas Training. She was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon with Breastcheck and Galway University Hospital in 2017.

Professor Lowery’s area of clinical expertise is in breast disease and breast cancer management in both screening and symptomatic populations including contemporary breast surgery and locoregional management approaches – stereotactic surgery, sentinel lymph node assessment, oncoplastic techniques and immediate breast reconstruction. Her endocrine surgery interest and expertise includes thyroid and parathyroid surgery including minimal access surgical approaches to benign and malignant endocrine disease.

Professor Lowery is also an Academic Professor, Director of the Clinical Research Facility and a Principle investigator in the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at University of Galway. Dual-trained as a clinician scientist she completed her PhD on the Molecular Medicine Ireland Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme in 2009 prior to completing specialist training in breast and endocrine surgery and. She has contributed extensively to the field of cancer research, with over 140 peer reviewed publications and has been recognised with numerous academic awards including the Sir Robert Smith Medal from the Association of Surgeons and Great Britain & Ireland, the Millin Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Professor Lowery is currently a recipient of the Irish Cancer Society Clinical Research Leadership award and a principal investigator in the Women’s Health Initiative cancer survivorship programme co-funded by the Irish Cancer Society and the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. She is Director of the Clinical Research Facility Galway, an Associate Director on the Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) programme and a mentor on the Bioinnovate Programme at University of Galway. Her research work is currently supported by the Irish Cancer Society, Enterprise Ireland, and National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
