Functional gastrointestinal disorders are common disorders that are characterised by persistent and recurring GI symptoms and occur because of the abnormal function of the GI tract. They are not caused by tumours or masses or biochemical abnormalities and as a result many routine tests such as such as x-rays, CT scans, blood tests and endoscopic procedures can often result in normal/negative (non-disease) findings. They are chronic conditions which cause troubling gastrointestinal symptoms which are common and can be particularly disabling.
There are more than 20 recognised GI disorders which can affect any part of the GI tract including the oesophagus, stomach, bile duct and / or intestines. Some of the more common functional gastrointestinal disorders include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Dyspepsia, Vomiting, Bowel Pain and Constipation or Diarrhoea.
