Check out our top tips on how to keep your hair as healthy as possible.
1. Be gentle with your hair
A. Optimise your hair brushing technique.
Select your hair brush carefully. A wide-toothed comb or tangle-teezer can help you to prevent any breakage while brushing your hair.
Brushing your hair from the roots can cause damage- always brush your hair from the bottom and work up. Be especially gentle with your hair when it is wet. Wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage.
B. Try not to tie up your hair too tight.
Wearing your hair tight all day can put an unnecessary strain on your roots. This can damage your hair and cause it to break. Try to wear your hair down whenever you get the chance. If you’re tired of having your hair in your face, try opting for a hair band instead of tying it up to keep it out of the way.
C. Invest in quality hair care products
We tend to pay more attention to what we put on our skin more than what we put on hair. Consider reading the ingredients of your hair care products and investing in products with high quality ingredients.
For example, choose a sulphate free formula with mild surfactants. You could look for humectants like coconut oil to counter any roughness, quaternium salts to condition hair and silicon oils to make your hair shiny.
2. Protect your hair from heat
A. Use this time as an opportunity to avoid heated styling tools.
The majority of our social events are cancelled and many of us are working from home. Now is the perfect opportunity to avoid heated styling tools by letting our hair dry naturally and trying out some heat-free hair styles. *Top tip: Plait your hair when you come out of the shower to keep it tame as it dries.
B. If you’re using a heated styling tool, try using it at the lowest possible temperature that works for your hair and always use a heat protectant spray!
C. Protect your hair from the sun
Just as sunlight has a damaging effect on your skin, it applies to your hair too. Harsh sun rays can remove the moisture from your hair making it dry and damaged over time. Select a stylish hat to protect your hair when you are enjoying the sunshine!
3. Look after your hair from the inside out
Drinking plenty of water, maintaining a healthy nutrient dense diet and keeping active are key staples to our overall health as well as the hair on our head.
Look after your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health. Stress and hair loss can be related. By managing your stress levels, you can protect your hair. If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair, visit your General Practitioner for advice. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment.
4. Trim your Hair Regularly
Last but not least, our final hair care tip is to have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to get rid of any split ends. If you’re not experienced in holding a pair of scissors, it might be best to hold off until your hairdresser re-opens again before experimenting with any DIY haircuts.
