Minister Norma Foley officially opens new unit as part of Bon Secours national investment.

Monday the 5th of December, 2022: The Minister for Education and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, has today officially opened a newly refurbished and re-located Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) in Bon Secours Tralee.
The new Tralee MAU represents a €430,000 capital outlay by the group and is part of a national investment plan by the Bon Secours Health System in its services as part of a new strategy, "Resilience, Reliability and Readiness - The 2025 Plan".  The initiative includes new capital projects, state-of-the-art equipment, IT infrastructure, and the creation of 450 new jobs across the country.  Bon Secours Hospital Tralee is an acute care facility comprising 131 beds that provides a comprehensive range of modern diagnostic, therapeutic, and support services to more than 50,000 patients annually, with the new MAU to further enhance the hospital's healthcare offering.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Norma Foley said: "The Bon Secours Health System has been a vital part of Irish healthcare in Ireland for more than 100 years. The opening of the refurbished Medical Assessment Unit marks another significant development for the healthcare group and for Bon Secours in Tralee specifically.  As a Tralee woman, I am very appreciative of the work done by the Bon Secours staff here, whose reputation for care and compassion is second-to-none within the local community and beyond."

Bon Secours Health System Group Chief Executive, Bill Maher, added: "This new €430,000 MAU is part of our plan to expand, deepen, and enhance the range of services we offer our patients here in Tralee and nationwide.  A key strategic goal is to grow our services in a sustainable manner to meet the evolving needs of our patients and communities, and I am delighted in particular that Your Grace the Bishop of Kerry and Minister Foley could join us on this important day for the hospital. The Bon Secours Health System continues to be unrivalled in the quality of our medical service provision, combining the latest medical technologies and approaches with compassion and personalised medical care. The next phase of our development will build on this further, with a focus on partnership with the public system to increase national capacity, improve services and jointly tackle waiting lists."

TJ O'Connor, Bon Secours Tralee Hospital CEO, said: "We are continually striving to make improvements to what is already a state-of-the-art hospital here in Tralee, and this development will equip us to offer patients in the region an even wider range of best-practice, technologically advanced healthcare services. In addition to the vital treatments and services we offer, our greatest asset is our people, and so I would like to thank all those who worked through the last few difficult pandemic years for continuing to give all our patients the highest quality of care and treatment possible. Today's opening marks a milestone that should be a great source of pride for all of us here in Tralee " .

Founded by the Bon Secours sisters in 1921, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee has grown significantly since its establishment and is now at the forefront of healthcare in the Kerry community. The hospital is one of five nationally within the Bon Secours Health System which is the largest private healthcare provider in Ireland.
