Hepatology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study, prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases that affect the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas. Our Hepatology Department in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee is led by Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Dr Hisham Sherfi.

Our Hepatology Department in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee is led by Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Dr Hisham Sherfi. Dr Sherfi has extensive experience in treating various luminal and liver diseases as well as diagnostic and interventional endoscopy including Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Our Hepatology Department has a Fibroscanner which is a special ultrasound technology that measures liver stiffness (hardness) and fatty changes in your liver. Patients who would benefit from such a scan include patients with fatty liver, chronic liver problems, diabetic patients, inherited liver diseases, alcohol excess and deranged liver enzymes, regardless of their age. These images will be reported by Dr Sherfi.

Dr Hisham Sherfi, has joined us from the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in the UK as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist MBBS, MRCP, SCE, CCT (UK).
Dr Sherfi completed his Specialist Registrar training in Gastroenterology, Hepatology & General Internal Medicine across various sites in the UK including the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospitals, Cardiff Royal Infirmary & the University Hospital of South Manchester.
Dr Sherfi has extensive experience in treating various luminal and liver diseases as well as diagnostic and interventional Endoscopy including ERCP.
Dr Sherfi will be offering a Hepatology service from the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee for the first time and to support this we have purchased a Fibroscanner. This is a new non-invasive device which measures the elasticity of the liver and thedegree of fibrosis and cirrhosis. Patients who would benefit from such a scan include patients with fatty liver, chronic liver problems, diabetic patients, inherited liver diseases, alcohol excess and deranged liver enzymes; regardless of their age. These images will be reported by Dr Sherfi.
