Dr Haytham Makki attends a meeting of the Castleisland Probus Group.

Dr Haytham Makki, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee  and Marie Flynn, Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinical Nurse Specialist also based in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee attended a meeting of the Castleisland Probus Group in the River Island Hotel, Castleisland on Wednesday the 28th of September last.

Irish Heart Month is observed in September and this year the Irish Foundation has launched the #HerHeartMatters campaign to raise awareness of the prevalence of heart disease and stroke amongst women.

Keeping in line with the theme of the Irish Heart Foundation’s #HerHeartMatters campaign, Dr Makki discussed how the symptoms of heart disease can vary between men and women.  Due to  these differing symptoms this can often lead to delays in treating and diagnosing heart disease in women.

Dr Makki spoke about the risk factors associated with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Diabetes, being overweight, inactivity and how simple lifestyle changes can be adopted to improve heart health.

Dr Makki’s presentation concluded with a Q&A session and a lovely cup of tea! Some very interesting and relevant questions were raised by the attendees which Dr Makki and Marie were delighted to answer.  Both Dr Makki and Marie would like to thank the Castleisland Probus Group for making them feel so welcome and for the lovely comments and feedback.
