Prof Denis Harkin is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Chair of Medical Professionalism at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  He completed his initial vascular training in Belfast and then as a Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Travelling Fellow to the University of Toronto and Stanford Medical Centre.

Prof Harkins research interests include ischaemia-reperfusion injury, aortic aneurysm, vascular trauma and medical professionalism. He has published over 130 articles and over 10 book chapters.

He was appointed member of the inaugural Specialty Advisory Committee for the new specialty of Vascular Surgery in 2012 and appointed inaugural Training Programme Director for Vascular Surgery and established a specialist training programme for Vascular Surgery in the Northern Ireland Deanery in 2013. He is a Clinical Appraiser and examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS Vascular Exam in UK and European Board Vascular Surgery Exams and was elected to the Council of the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland in 2015 to 2018.

Denis was Assistant Medical Director for Legal Services at the Belfast health & Social Care Trust from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, he  was appointed Professor and Chair of Medical Professionalism at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland University of Medicine and Health Sciences & Bon Secours Health System.
