The Vascular Surgery Department at the Bon Secours Hospital provides the full range of vascular services including the management of patients with peripheral vascular disease and lower limb venous disease including varicose vein removal.
Vascular surgery is used to resolve problems with the vascular system (arteries and veins) such as varicose veins.
There are currently 6 Vascular Surgeons working in the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin who provide non-operative treatment, open surgery and endovascular surgery to treat a full range of vascular disorders. These are provided on a day case or in-patient basis depending upon the procedure. Where possible, the team uses minimally invasive techniques to facilitate recovery.

Most varicose vein treatments are provided on a walk-in, walk-out basis, generally under local anaesthetic or where required under general anaesthetic.

The hospital has recently opened a new dedicated Vascular Lab which provides provides non-invasive diagnostic ultrasound imaging and pressure recordings to detect and quantify the presence of arterial and venous disease throughout the body. Prof Denis Harkin is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Chair of Medical Professionalism at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his initial vascular training in Belfast and then as a Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Travelling Fellow to the University of Toronto and Stanford Medical Centre.
Prof Harkins research interests include ischaemia-reperfusion injury, aortic aneurysm, vascular trauma and medical professionalism. He has published over 130 articles and over 10 book chapters.
He was appointed member of the inaugural Specialty Advisory Committee for the new specialty of Vascular Surgery in 2012 and appointed inaugural Training Programme Director for Vascular Surgery and established a specialist training programme for Vascular Surgery in the Northern Ireland Deanery in 2013. He is a Clinical Appraiser and examiner for the Intercollegiate FRCS Vascular Exam in UK and European Board Vascular Surgery Exams and was elected to the Council of the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland in 2015 to 2018.
Denis was Assistant Medical Director for Legal Services at the Belfast health & Social Care Trust from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, he was appointed Professor and Chair of Medical Professionalism at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland University of Medicine and Health Sciences & Bon Secours Health System.
Prof Harkins practice at the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin will focus primarily on the treatment of Varicose Veins.

Mr Kheirelseid graduated from the University of Khartoum, Sudan in 2000 and underwent basic surgical training in Galway University Hospital. He was awarded the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) scholarship to conduct research at NUI Galway and received PhD by thesis. He completed his higher surgical training in Ireland, followed by a fellowship in peripheral intervention for occlusive arterial disease and diabetic foot management from King’s College Hospital, London.
In addition to joining our team of Vascular Surgeons, Mr Kheirelseid works as a consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital and Cavan General Hospital.

Prof. McDonnell graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1995 and undertook his surgical training in Ireland and Australia. He was appointed to the staff of the Mater Hospital in 2007 and also operates in the Mater Private Hospital and the Bon Secours Hospital.
He was appointed Associate Clinical Professor of Vascular Surgery at University College Dublin in 2016.

Seamus McHugh graduated from UCD in 2005. He completed his post graduate research MD with RCSI in2011. Following surgical training in General and Vascular Surgery in Ireland, he travelled to Toronto where he completed a Clinical Fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He was appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Beaumont Hospital in 2016.
To date he has published over 50 peer reviewed articles, received the Clinical Research Associate of the Year award at the Irish Healthcare Awards, and is currently the speciality editor for vascular surgery with “The Surgeon” journal.

Mr Daragh Moneley graduated from RCSI (1996) and went on to complete his fellowship training in the University Health Network, University of Toronto, Canada from 2006 -2008.
He is an integral part of the Bon Secours Hospital Dublin Vascular Consultant team. He also attends the Bon Secours Cavan Clinic.

Prof Peter Naughton has worked as a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Beaumont since 2011 and as a Senior Lecturer with RCSI. He is a graduate of RCSI and completed his basic and higher surgical training in Dublin followed by a one year fellowship in St Mary’s Hospital, London and a 2 year endovascular fellowship in North Western Memorial Hospital, Chicago. He joined the Vascular Surgical team in the Bon Secours Hospital in Dublin in 2014.
Peter is a member of the American Venous Forum, Irish Society of Vascular Surgery and the European Society of Vascular Surgery
Peter has a specialist interest in both open and endovascular treatment for venous, peripheral vascular and aneurysmal disease
