Our History

Ireland was the first Country to which Bon Secours spread from France followed by:

  • Great Britain
  • U.S.A.
  • South America
  • South Africa.

1861 four Sisters arrived in Dublin.

1867 four Sisters arrived in Cork and from there in 1879 four Sisters came to Tralee.

The names of these Sisters were - Sr.Marine, Sr.Hillary, Sr. Catherine and Sr. Ferdinand. They were provided with a house in Denny Street by a grateful benefactor named Lady Donovan.

1882 The Convent on Strand Street was opened.

1889 The Convent was extended.

1902 – 1937 The Sisters cared for the sick in the town’s Infirmary as well as in their homes.

1937   - 1987 Bon Secours ran  Edenburn  first as a  unit for patients suffering from Tuberculosis (T. B.) and later as a home for the elderly.

1921 The purchase of Property adjacent to the Convent.

1922 Bon Secours Nursing Home/Hospital was opened.

 Renovation, expansion and modernization have continued on this building and site since then.
