Biography

Mr Breandán Long MB, BCh, BAO, FRCSI, FFSEM

Mr Breandán Long is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. He graduated in medicine from University College Galway and did his orthopaedic training in Dublin and an arthroscopy fellowship in Birmingham, U.K. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Mr Breandán Long has considerable experience in treating all complex knee sport injuries. He has pioneered in Ireland the use of the larger 5 strand hamstring tendon graft for ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears. He also has considerable experience in redo ACL surgery using bone patellar bone graft and also the Quadriceps tendon graft. He has a particular interest in the rehab of ACL injuries and the use of isokinetic testing.

Repairs of osteochondral lesions using intra articular screws and suturing of meniscal tears can be accomplished arthroscopically.

Mr Long also performs patellar stabilisation surgery for dislocating and subluxating patellas.  Tibial tubercle transfers or medial patella femoral ligament reconstruction techniques are used.

Chondral lesions are treated using microfracture techniques followed by a specific rehab programme.

His other area of particular interest is shoulder surgery, where he has specialist expertise in treating rotator cuff tears, impingement syndrome, acromioclavicular joint degeneration and frozen shoulder.  These procedures are key hole and are performed using the arthroscope.

Shoulder dislocation, subluxation and labral tears can be treated arthroscopically using fixation devices and in cases that warrant it, the open Latarjet procedure is used.

Mr Long also treats all kinds of tendinopathies, such as tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, De Quervain’s synovitis in the wrist and Achilles tendonitis using a variety of treatments including platelet injections and surgery.

Hand problems like Dupuytren’s contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome and ganglion lesions can be successfully operated on.

Mr Long has a clinic in Bon Secours Hospital Barrington’s Limerick every Monday and is happy to accommodate any urgent case on the day.
