Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine which focuses on the digestive system and its disorders.

Gastroenterology involves the study of the normal function and diseases of the

  • small intestine
  • colon
  • rectum
  • pancreas
  • gall bladder
  • liver; and
  • bile ducts 

Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology Laboratory

Bon Secours Cork is the only private hospital in Ireland to offer a dedicated Physiologist lead diagnostic GI Physiology service.
Currently, the lab offers the following investigations

Ambulatory 24-hour pH & impedance monitoring
Hydrogen and Methane Testing for Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth/ Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth

The following are some of the gastroenterology complaints that we assess and treat:

  • Bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Constipation and diarrhoea
  • Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Cancers,for example: 
    • colorectal
    • stomach
    • pancreatic; and
    • liver
  • Diverticular disease and other diseases of the colon
    • polyps 
    • IBS (Irritable boweln syndrome)
    • colitis (inflammation of the colon); and
    • Crohn's disease
  • Liver disease,for example:
    • Hepatitis; and
    • jaundice 
  • Malabsorption disorders,for example;
    • coeliac disease
    • lactose intolerance

We also provide some of the following gastroenterology tests:

  • Colonscopy - We examine the colon with an endoscope
  • Stool test - We do tests on a stool sample to help diagnose certain conditions affecting the digestive tract
  • Barium swallow -The patient swallows liquid barium while we take X-ray images
  • Endoscopy - This involves using an endoscope to examine inside the body

Biography

Dr Houlihan gratuated from NUI Galway in 2002.  He joined the Higher Specialist Training programme in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2005.

In 2009, Dr Houlihan was awarded an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship (UK) and commenced his PhD focusing on the therapeutic effects of stem cells on Gut and Liver disease at the University of Birmingham, UK.

He was subsequently appointed as a Senioe Fellow with the Gastroenterology and Hepatology services working in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

In 2013, Dr Houlihan was appointed as Consultant Gastroenterolgist & Hepatologist in St Vincent's University Hospital (SVUH)

In 2014, Dr Houlihan was appointed as Director of Hepatology and Liver Transplanation in SVUH.  As part of this role, he represented Ireland's interests at quarterly meeting of the "Liver Advisory Group" hosted by NHSBT UK.

He has extensive research interests in the field of both liver and gastrointestinal disease.

Dr Houlihan is the Clinical Lead for Research with the "Irish Hepatitis C Outcomes and Research Network" (ICORN).  He has numerous publiciations in international journals in his area of interest.
