Fibroscan

The procedure

Fibroscan is the gold standard non-invasive solution for the comprehensive management of liver health. A fibroscan delivers biomarkers for fibrosis and steatosis assessment. The scan normally takes 15 – 20 minutes to perform. 

This service is led by Dr Maeve Skelly Consultant Gastroenterologist at Bon Secours Hospital Limerick.  Dr Skelly has a particular interest in all aspects of GI Endoscopy and has researched and published on this area. Her clinical interests include investigation and management of liver disease. ​

Referral required

A referral from a GP or Consultant sent via Healthlink for the attention of Dr Maeve Skelly is required 

Getting ready

You should fast for at least 3 hours before your examination.
We also recommend that you wear comfortable clothes that will allow access to the right side of the rib cage

Potential complications

The fibroscan is completely non invasive and entirely non invasive. 

On the day

You will need to fast for at least 3 hours prior to having the procedure to ensure your stomach is empty. 

Please arrive at the hospital at the designated time for your procedure. You will be directed to the Fibroscan unit where the scan will take place. 

During the procedure / examination

The examination is carried out by a trained technician. 

You will lie on your back with your right arm above your head. You will cross your right leg over your left to help open your rib spaces.

Gel will be applied and the probe will be placed between your rib spaces. 

The procedure is entirely painless but you may feel a slight vibration from the probe as the measurements are taken. 

Report / Results

A copy of the report will be sent directly to your referring GP and / or Consultant. 

Insurance

The Fibroscan costs €200. It is not currently covered by insurance.
