1824: Bon Secours is founded by Josephine Potel and her 11 companions, as a religious congregation in post revolution Paris. Their Mission: to care for the Sick, the Dying and their Families, in their own homes – this new form of healthcare was radical – bringing quality healthcare to people in their own homes – Good Help to those in Need. Bringing the healing love of Christ to those most in need was the core Mission of the Founding Sisters.
History of Bon Secours – Cork
- 1861: Dublin – this was their first presence outside of France and marked the beginning of Bon Secours bringing quality Catholic Healthcare to an international level – currently in 7 countries.
- April 1867 Four Sisters arrived in Cork from the Motherhouse in Dublin. They were Sr. Bertille, Sister Leon, Sr. Marcelle & Sr. Celine. They worked with the poor in the Marsh Disctrict, and the wealthy in the suburbs.
- 1872: Moved to Shrubbery House, Mardyke
- 1879: Convent built on College Road
- 1915: Health Care Changing in Ireland; First unit of present hospital opened
- 1923: Recognised as Training School
- 1925: Second unit and Chapel added
- 1940: 100 Bed wing added + Sisters Accommodation
- 2002: Mount Desert.
