Urology

Urology is a surgical speciality that deals with the treatment of conditions involving the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs.

We have an incontinence advice clinic and we assess and treat a range of urological complaints. We provide:

☛ incontinence surgery,

☛ urodynamic evaluation – how the bladder and urethra are performing,

☛ renal stone surgery,

☛ an erectile dysfunction clinic,

☛ laser surgery for prostate and bladder,

☛ testosterone replacement therapy, and

☛ prostatectomy – removal of all or part of prostate gland.

The Rapid Access Prostate service provides prompt diagnosis and treatment of prostate gland disorders including prostate cancer

Biography

Kevin graduated from University College Dublin in 2000. Basic Surgical Training was carried out at the Cork University Hospital. He was awarded a Masters of Surgery (MCh) in 2007 through the Conway Institute, UCD after completing  one year of fulltime basic science research into castrate resistant prostate cancer. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Urology in 2010.  Specialist urological training in Ireland was completed in 2012.

Following training in Ireland subspecialist training was carried out in Melbourne, Australia where he completed a fellowship in Robotic Uro-Oncology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

In August 2013 Kevin was appointed Consultant Urologist at the Western General Hospital (WGH), Edinburgh specialising in minimally invasive kidney and prostate cancer. In 2017 he returned to Ireland and was appointed Consultant Urologist at Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Waterford. He has introduced robotic assisted radical prostatectomy to the CUH serving the population of the South and Southwest. He is the current NCCP lead for prostate cancer at the CUH.

 

Areas of Interest

Special Interests: Urologic malignancies; minimally invasive (keyhole and robotic) and open surgery. Haematuria, Lower urinary tract symptoms.

Biography

Dr Jean O’Riordan is a Consultant Urologist originally from Watergrasshill, who has returned home to work full-time in the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork.  She is a General Urologist with a subspecialty interest in incontinence.
She graduated from UCD in 2010 and completed her internship in the Mater Hospital in Dublin. She completed her specialist urology training in Australia and was awarded her fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2022.  She completed a fellowship year in Concord Hospital in Sydney which was 6 months of oncology and 6 months of female andfunctional urology.   She then completed a fellowship in University
College London Hospital in functional, reconstructive and adolescent urology.   She was recently awarded the Alban Gee award at the USANZ annual meeting for the best poster presentation.

She treats men, women and children over 2 years with urological problems.

Biography

Mr Matthew Tyson is a specialist in both the surgical and medical treatment of Kidney Stone Disease and General Urology, including BPH and penoscrotal surgery. After graduating from the Cardiff University School of Medicine and completing Specialist Urological Training in Northern Ireland, Mr Tyson undertook a Urological Surgical Fellowship in New Zealand, focusing on Surgical Kidney Stone Management.

As a Consultant Urologist in Northern Ireland, Mr Tyson developed regional Stone Services for Complex Stone Surgery and ESWL, his work on which was awarded an Elective Care Recognition Award from the Department of Health NI. Mr Tyson has also undertaken an ADEPT Fellowship, achieved a NIMDTA Educational Excellence Award and completed a postgraduate ILM Level 7 for Clinical Leadership and Management.

Mr Tyson is strongly invested in Medical Education with previous roles encompassing a Fellowship in Medical Education, Honorary Lecturer for Birmingham University and Postgraduate Dean’s Prize recipient for Research into Medical Education, Clinical Tutor for Queens University Belfast and Medical School Examiner, Module Lead for Urology Ulster University Postgraduate Medical School and Recognised NIMDTA Trainer for Urology Trainees as well as Foundation Doctors.
