Saturday May 18th marks European Obesity Day!

Saturday, 18th May marks European Obesity
Day! Obesity is the medical term used to describe the state of being overweight to the point where it is harmful to your health.

Ireland is set to become the most obese country in Europe, with the UK, within a decade, according to a study published in The Lancet.
Irish men already have the highest BMI in Europe, while Irish women rank third, the study shows.

The most convenient way of measuring obesity is to compare a person’s weight with their height, and this is done using the Body Mass Index (BMI). To calculate your BMI, you divide your weight in kilos by your height in metres squared. The World Health Organisation defines obesity as having a BMI of 30 or greater.

Obesity is caused by lifestyle choices, and these habits need to be broken if an obese person is to stand a good chance of losing weight. There is no quick fix to losing weight, however, taking up regular exercise and seeing a dietitian for advise can help you to make the right steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
