A new paediatric assessment unit (PAU) at Bon Secours Hospital Tralee will provide a valuable service for parents and GPs in Kerry for children requiring urgent medical attention.
The new PAU will provide parents and GPs with rapid access to Paediatric Consultants with immediate access to state of the art diagnostics and a hospital bed if required.
The PAU is a dedicated facility where ill children and young people up to 16 years can be treated for illnesses including high temperatures, chest condition, infections, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Hospital Manager TJ O Connor said “We are delighted to launch the new PAU to promote health and wellbeing for children and their parents in Kerry and further afield. To expand our Paediatric service, we welcome our two new Consultant Paediatricians Dr Waqar Ahmad and Dr Rashid Ghori to our team, who bring their experience from Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Limerick, the Coombe, Tallaght University Hospital and Temple Street Children’s Hospital to Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.”
Children attending the PAU are comprehensively assessed one to one by a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Nurse and the best course of treatment is tailored to the particular symptom of each child.
Consultant Paediatrician Dr Waqar describes the unit; “Our aim is to provide peace of mind to parents who are stressed or worried about a sick child by ensuring fast access for children to our senior medical and nursing staff. We will assess your child’s condition, make recommendations on treatments and provide follow up care if required”.
The paediatric team have also developed packaged priced treatments for common childhood complaints including asthma, allergy testing, bed wetting and eczema.
Dr Ghori acknowledged that coming to hospital can sometimes be a worrying time for children, young people and their families. “Hospitals can be a confusing place and it can be helpful and reassuring to know what to expect. We will help you to navigate your way through the experience of coming to hospital, explain some common hospital routines and processes and hopefully answer many of your questions, to help you to deal with your child's fears and uncertainties”.
The PAU provides patients with:
- Rapid access to expert Consultant assessment and a range of diagnostic tests
- Admission to Hospital if necessary under the care of Consultant Paediatricians
- On discharge, the Consultants will liaise directly with the patient’s GP to ensure continuity of the child’s care
Where required, referral to other Bon Secours Hospital Services and Consultants will be fast tracked.
The unit opens on Monday September 28th and will be accepting referrals from GPs 09:00-17:00, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).
