General internal Medicine encompasses the care of the general medical needs of inpatients and outpatients, to include the management of acute medical problems.
The General Internal Medicine service at the Bon Secours Tralee is a 24/7 service, managed by a team of multidisciplinary Consultant Physicians. This General Internal Medicine service offers a comprehensive program in health promotion and disease prevention. Our Internal Medicine physicians provide a full range of care including periodic health examinations with appropriate screening for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and other common, treatable conditions. We focus on identifying risk factors and health management along with interventions, such as lipid-lowering diets, smoking cessation programs, and exercise regimens.
Our General Internal Medicine Consultants provide a range of services for adult patients, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses and diseases and create one to one relationships with their patients so as to best develop individualized care plans and, if necessary, provide access to the broad range of specialty care providers within the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. This Consultant team specializes in all aspects of inpatient internal medicine and are continuously available to patients and their families during hospitalization. The team also provides consultation throughout the hospital on issues of perioperative management, anticoagulation care, heart failure, and respiratory care.

Dr Zulfiqar Hussain graduated from Liaquat Medical College, Pakistan in 1997. After graduation, he went on to become a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He received specialist registration in Gastroenterology and Medicine by the Irish Medical Council in 2010 and the General Medical Council in 2012. He has attended conferences both nationally and internationally and has participated in numerous publications. He has taken many opportunities to teach throughout his career. His teaching experience includes giving presentations, clinical tutorials and lectures. He also provided ward rounds to senior house officers and interns. He is a member of the American Association of Gastroenterology.
Dr Hussain’s professional interests include intervention Endoscopy. He has extensive experience in diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy.
Dr Azhar Jahangir is a Consultant Respiratory & General Physician who has completed all of his specialist respiratory training in Cork University Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital Dublin, St James’ University Hospital Dublin & East of England Denary Hospitals in the UK. Since 2014 he has been working as a Consultant Pulmonologist at the King Hamad University Hospital in Bahrain. During this time he also held the posts of Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and the Medical University of Bahrain.
Dr Jahangir has a special interest in Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sleep Disorders and complex Asthma. He is also skilled in all emergency and routine respiratory and general medical procedures.
Dr Mulgrew completed his Specialist Training in Respiratory and General Medicine in 2004. Since then, he has taken part in numerous presentations , research projects and publications. He has written chapters for two books regarding the area of Sleep Apnoea and other sleep disorders. He was awarded numerous Grant and Fellowship Funding by the British Columbia Lung Association , the Canadian Institute for Health Research /Heart Stroke Foundation Canada, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Philips Respironics.
Dr Mulgrew’s teaching experience includes lecturing at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This role included bedside, classroom and lecture based teaching to undergraduates, post graduates and nurses. He also scheduled and co-ordinated the clinical teaching of 3rd and Final Med RCSI students, planning their curriculum and implementing new teaching strategies. Dr Mulgrew was awarded the Best Clinical Teacher from Final Med Class 2002 at the RCSI. He was also awarded Best Clinical Teacher in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, St Vincent’s University Hospital,2004, and was nominated to the student mentoring program.
