Sleep Services

The Sleep Medicine Department at Bon Secours Galway is a fully equipped, dedicated facility

The Sleep Medicine Department at our hospital in Galway is a fully equipped, dedicated facility with a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of sleep services and disorders including sleep apnoea.

We offer expert care using the latest state of the art equipment with exacting adherence to international guidelines (American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Irish sleep Society).

Patients with sleep related breathing disorders most commonly present with snoring, witnessed breathing pauses and daytime sleepiness. The latter often affects work/school and driving performance. Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and related sleep/breathing disorders affects over 4% of Irish adults with significant commodities in terms of hypertension, cardiac disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and driving risk.

The Road Safety Authority “Medical Fitness to Drive Guidelines” of January 2013 recognises the 3 fold increased rate of motor vehicle accidents in untreated OSAS patients. OSAS is now a specified disorder in Irish driver licensing applications requiring medical certification before a license is issued.

Studies are conducted at the hospital, on an inpatient basis and are non-invasive.

Services Offered:

  • Assessment of daytime hyper somnolence including the “sleepy driver”
  • Assessment for positional/ENT or prosthodontic therapy for snoring
  • BIPAP/ ventilator support for patients with Obesity/Hypoventilation syndrome
  • Cardiology and metabolic risk assessment

  • Diagnosis and treatment of narcolepsy
  • Initiation of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
