The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, led by Consultants Dr Alan Mulgrew and Dr Azhar Jahangir, provide expert services in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic respiratory and sleep disorders.We provide a wide range of services for a host of different conditions, such as asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, sleep apnoea.

1. Pulmonary Function Testing (>10hrs of age) incorporating:
- Spirometry with bronchodilator response testing Static Lung Volumes
- Diffusing Capacity
- Body Plethysmography (including thoracic gas volume and airways resistance)
- Maximum Respiratory Pressures (MIPs / MEPs)
- Mannitol Test for Asthma ( > 18 yrs of age)

Mary Nagle (Advanced Nurse Practioner)
Mary Nagle began training as a nurse at the Cope Foundation in County Cork in 1996 and graduated as a Registered Nurse
in Learning Disability in 1999. In 2000, Mary commenced an 18 month post graduate certificate in general nursing in St
Michael's hospital Dun Laoighaire. Mary completed this course in 2002 and spent the next three years working a long side
Professor Tim McDonnell, Consultant Respiratory Physician and HSE Clinical lead on a COPD programme. During this time,
Mary gained vast experience in an array of respiratory specialities including; COPD, ashthma, pulmonary rehabilitation and
Non invasive ventilation. Mary also commenced a BSc (Hons) in Respiratory and completed a BSc (Hons) in Nursing.
In 2005, Mary returned to Kerry where she spent two years working in UHK and commenced a masters in Science in Nursing in
Institute of Technology Tralee. Mary joined the Bon Secours Team as a Respiratory Nurse Specialist in 2007 and completed
a course in nurse prescribing in 2012, becoming the first registered nurse prescriber in the Bon Secours Hospital group.
Mary has recently completed advanced practice in University College Cork and is now registered as a Advanced Nurse Practitioner
in Respiratory Medicine.

Dr. Azhar Jahangir
Consultant Respiratory Physician & General Internal Medicine
Biography
Dr Azhar Jahangir is a Consultant Respiratory & General Physician who has completed all of his specialist respiratory training in Cork University Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital Dublin, St James’ University Hospital Dublin & East of England Denary Hospitals in the UK. Since 2014 he has been working as a Consultant Pulmonologist at the King Hamad University Hospital in Bahrain. During this time he also held the posts of Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and the Medical University of Bahrain.
Areas of Interest
Dr Jahangir has a special interest in Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sleep Disorders and complex Asthma. He is also skilled in all emergency and routine respiratory and general medical procedures.

MRCP (UK)- Royal College of Physicians UK 2008 MRCP (Ireland) – Royal College of Physicians of Ireland 2005 MBBS – University of Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan 1994.
Dr. Alan Mulgrew
Consultant Respiratory Physician
Biography
Dr Mulgrew completed his Specialist Training in Respiratory and General Medicine in 2004. Since then, he has taken part in numerous presentations , research projects and publications. He has written chapters for two books regarding the area of Sleep Apnoea and other sleep disorders. He was awarded numerous Grant and Fellowship Funding by the British Columbia Lung Association , the Canadian Institute for Health Research /Heart Stroke Foundation Canada, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Philips Respironics.
Dr Mulgrew’s teaching experience includes lecturing at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This role included bedside, classroom and lecture based teaching to undergraduates, post graduates and nurses. He also scheduled and co-ordinated the clinical teaching of 3rd and Final Med RCSI students, planning their curriculum and implementing new teaching strategies. Dr Mulgrew was awarded the Best Clinical Teacher from Final Med Class 2002 at the RCSI. He was also awarded Best Clinical Teacher in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, St Vincent’s University Hospital,2004, and was nominated to the student mentoring program.
