In pursuing our Mission, which is “good help to those in need”, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee strives to maintain close links with the Community it serves. One of the ways it endeavours to do this is by assisting local charities and ‘not for profit’ groups / organisations to meet the healthcare and related social or economic needs of the community, through its Community Initiatives Fund.
The Management and Staff of Bon Secours Hospital Tralee are delighted to have been in a positon to provide a total of €20,000 in funding to Foodshare Kerry over the past four years. Foodshare Kerry, an initiative of North & East Kerry Development and Saint Vincent de Paul, is a not-for-profit organisation set up to help local charity groups to combat hunger. This project rescues quality surplus food from supermarkets and food producers and makes it available to organisations who know how best to redistribute it to those in need. Its aim is not only to have an impact on a major social problem but also to be a benefit to the environment by preventing the needless dumping of perfectly good foodstuff.
Foodshare Kerry delivers food to numerous charities around the county representing some of the most vulnerable populations in Kerry including:
• Homeless persons
• Rough sleepers
• Homeless families, including those in emergency and temporary accommodation
• Children in low income or low work intensity households
• Persons suffering or recovering from addictions
• Certain members of the Roma and Traveller communities
• New Communities
• Persons without income or means not otherwise defined
• Older persons without adequate means/access to food
