Over sixty Physiotherapists attend the 11th Annual Physiotherapy Education Day in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee

Almost 60 physiotherapists attended the 11th Annual Physiotherapy Education Day in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee on Monday, 24thth of February. 

 

There were five speakers at the event which included Mr Ross Kingston, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Dr Derek Griffin, Specialist Physiotherapist with expertise in chronic pain disorders representing the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.  


Mr Ross Kingston gave an overview of the Orthopaedic Fellowship program, now in its 2nd year. The Fellowship was established by Ross and Santry Sports Clinic’s Ruth Delaney.  This year’s Fellow is Joachim Demyttenaere from Belgium. Joachim is a resident in orthopaedic surgery Heilig- Hart Ziekenhuis, Leueven. A cum laude graduate of masters of medicine at University of Leuven, Joachim also holds a masters in Orthopaedic Surgery from University of Leuven. 


Mr Ross Kingston also gave an overview of new technology in use in the orthopaedic theatres in the Bon Secours, summarised in SCR outcomes and new wrist procedures, and discussed clinical case studies with the attendees.


Dr Derek Griffin gave a presentation entitled ‘MSK The Challenge of Pain – Is Usual Care Evidence Based?’ Dr Derek Griffin emphasized there is always a person behind the pain and that simple models, while appealing, don’t hold up to the evidence. Pain is complex!


Among the other speakers we’re Christina Maxwell, a PhD student from University Limerick who is undertaking research on the impact of shoulder pain for patients. Christina gave a presentation about understanding shoulder pain and exploring the experiences of patients and their healthcare providers. Christina has interviewed Mr Ross Kingston as part of her research, as well as our Physiotherapy Manager, Rosalie Stack and our Orthopaedic Nurse Specialist, Margaret Cotter. 


Jamie Bowman spoke about Injection Therapy in Private Practice. Jamie is a Chartered Physiotherapist working in private practice who completed an RCSI certificate in injection therapy, part of which involved clinical placement with Mr Ross Kingston. 


Esther Mary D’Arcy, European Chair of the World Confederation of Physiotherapy and Professional Advisor at the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists spoke about CORU registration and the benefits for registrants. 


The feedback from the event was positive with attendees actively participating in the presentations and asking questions throughout the day.
